Call for Nominations

Applications are welcomed for the ICA Mobile Communication Division Emerging Scholar Research Grant. The Research Grant Committee will review applications and select one winner for a $500 grant to support a specific research project. The winner will be announced at the Mobile Communication Division business meeting at the ICA annual conference in June 2025.

Eligibility Criteria

 

  • The project should be relevant to the field of Mobile Communication. (see the mission of the division noted below)

  • Only one proposal per person will be considered. If you submit as part of a team, this is the only proposal you may submit.

  • The competition is limited to submitters who are current members of ICA and our division.

  • The committee seeks proposals from a diverse set of emerging scholars, including advanced graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and other early-career scholars and professors.

Submission Contents

 

A Project Summary should total no more than 3 pages and be single-spaced. It should provide: 

  • The author’s contact information;

  • An overview of the study, stressing the importance of the topic and the fit within mobile communication. This section should include the research questions and hypotheses, and a description of where the project is situated with mobile communication literature;

  • A description of proposed methods;

  • A summary of the anticipated contribution of the project to the field; and 

  • An explanation of how the $500 grant will be used to accomplish the goals of the project (The committee recommends that applicants link the use of the grant funds toward data collection and related needs).

Also, please include a 2-page Curriculum Vita (emphasizing research accomplishments, academic rank/experience, and progress in your education or career as applicable) and a 1-page Recommendation Letter from a supervisor or colleague that supports the submitter’s project.

Submission Deadline

 

Submit the Project Summary, CV, and Recommendation Letter together as attachments in a single email by 4 May 2025, 23:00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, GMT).

The mission of the Mobile Communication Division (Article 2 of the bylaws)

 

The Mobile Communication Division focuses on the phenomenon of mobility in communication – thus being placed at the intersection of mobility, technology, and culture in human communication. While including a wide array of approaches in communication scholarship from historical perspectives to studies on future media innovations, from ethnographic to quantitative empirical approaches, from journalism studies to media effects research the common ground of the Mobile Communication Division is state-of-the-art theorizing on mobile communication as well as rigorous methodology
